CHIS Staff and Head of Service

The staff within the service include: clinical neuropsychologists, clinical nurse specialist, medical consultant in neurological rehabilitation, occupational therapists, physiotherapist, speech and language therapist and work placement consultant, supported by assistant, student, administrative and reception staff.

Dr Andy Tyerman, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and Head of Service retired in June 2021 but will be undertaking some specific service-related research and teaching in an honorary capacity.

Andy was the architect of CHIS drawing upon the views of people with brain injury and their relatives. He has worked in brain injury rehabilitation since 1979 and sees strong community brain injury services as being essential to enable people to rebuild their lives after brain injury.  

Andy commented that he has been delighted to see the development of the Friends group which he hopes will give people with a brain injury and their relatives an additional voice in the ongoing development of CHIS as well as hopefully supporting the service in the initial funding of new initiatives.  After Andy retired Head of Service was awarded to Dr Nigel King.

 

Dr Nigel King, B.Sc.,Clin.Psy.D., C.Psychol. Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. Nigel also is responsible for the Clinical Neuropsychological Module on the Doctoral Course and the accreditation of prior learning of neuropsychologcal compentencies for trainees anticipating applying for the Division of Neuropsychology Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists after their training. He also teaches on the Professional Issues Module on 'Expert Witness & Court Work Skills'.

His professional Interests in head injury and trauma are as the Clinical Lead and the Head of Service of Neuropsychology at the Community Head Injury Service, Aylesbury, and was a Senior Research Fellow of Harris Manchester College - University of Oxford from 2008 to 2018. Nigel King’s latest book: An Introduction to Coping with Brain Injury: Just the Facts – published by Robinson April 2023 – a self-help book for patients and families. The Paperback version is £6.99. Also available a Kindle version.

At OXICPTR (Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research) he is a Clinical Tutor and Neuropsychology Lead.  He has published widely in internationally refereed journals in neuropsychology, head injury and post-traumatic stress disorder and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on these subjects. His self-help book Overcoming Mild Traumatic Brain Injury was shortlisted for the British Medical Association Book of the Year Award in their Popular Medicine category. In addition to Dr King’s NHS work he regularly acts as an expert witness conducting medico legal assessments for solicitors acting for claimants and defendants, and as a single-joint expert.
